All club members are welcome to join the informal discussion of any one or all of the sessions, which are held on the third Wednesday of each month at the Hopkins County-Madisonville Public Library at 2:00 p.m.

Under the Wide and Starry Sky by Nancy Horan

Robert Louis Stevenson and Fanny Osbourne begin a fierce love affair, marked by intense joy and harrowing darkness, which spans decades as they travel the world for the sake of his health. Eventually they settle in Samoa, where R. L. Stevenson is buried underneath the epitaph: “Under the wide and starry sky. Dig the grave and let me lie.”

Us Against You by Fredrik Backman

This novel, set in Sweden, continues the story of Beartownby this author (who also wrote A Man Called Ove). The residents of Beartown are tough, hardworking people who don’t expect life to be easy or fair. They’ve always been able to take pride in their local ice hockey team, especially when they are victorious over their longtime rivals in the neighboring town of Hed. But just when it seems that Beartown Ice Hockey might be disbanded due to the defection of their best players to Hed, the team gets a however, proves to be a challenge as old bonds are broken, new ones are formed, and the bitterness between the adversaries threatens to turn into violence. With immense compassion and insight, Fredrik Backman reveals how loyalty, friendship, and kindness can carry a town through its most challenging days.

Empire Falls by Richard Russo (Pulitzer Prize winner)

This novel tells the story of blue-collar life in the depressed New England mill town of Empire Falls, Maine. Miles Ruby, the main character, is the proprietor of the local greasy spoon and recently divorced father of a teenage daughter. Russo’s development of a diverse group of characters touches on love and marriage, lust and loss, small-town economics, and class resentment. Everything funnels into one explosive, extraordinary moment.
